Traders, transporters protest against imposition of toll tax on Kashmir highway

Anantnag, May 8: Scores of traders and transporters on Wednesday staged a protest in this south Kashmir district against the imposition of toll tax on Srinagar-Jammu national highway by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The protest comes after a toll plaza was made operational on Tuesday near Sangam on the national highway.
Scores of traders and transporters hit the streets outside Deputy Commissioner’s office in Anantnag, demanding an immediate rollback of the decision to levy toll tax near Sangam on the national highway.
The protestors affiliated to All Traders and Manufacturers Association Anantnag and transporters from Sumo Stand Union Janglatmandi, Bus and Matador Associations submitted a joint memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag.
Claiming that the decision to exempt tax for people living within 20 km radius was useless, the protestors demanded that all people from Jammu and Kashmir should be excluded from the purview of toll imposition.
“The toll tax will adversely affect our business. Cost of carriage of goods, locally, with go up and at the same time civilian transport cost will also increase,” the demonstrators said.
