Lolab stream turns into garbage dumping site

Kupwara : The Lolab stream flowing through the Kupwara town has become a garbage dumping site with people residing nearby it throwing all the waste on its banks.
The area from Zangli to Lolab sumo stand is worst hit as heaps of garbage is lying and scattered on its banks the stream now emanates foul smell which is posing health hazards particularly at a time when people are passing,
Locals told Time and Us that most of the people passing through the stream are complaining of viral fever along with severe cough and cold. The inhabitants said that we have repeatedly approached the authorities regarding the issue, but they don’t even bother to listen to us. Leave alone solving the problem,” the local alleged.
Heaps of garbage lying unattended for days are an eyesore and attract stray dogs. At times, the stench is overwhelming Khursheed Ahmed a local inhabitant of area told Time and Us.
The locals have also blamed the employees of town area committee Kupwara of dumping the waste collected from the interior areas of the town into the stream.
It is pertinent to mention here that Lolab nallah is a major source of water for drinking and irrigation purpose but people scare to use more now,because of its polluted nature and got contaminated.
Meanwhile people appealed district development commissioner to take immediate measures to restore the pristine glory of the Lolab nallah.
