Lashker commander killed in Pulwama encounter

Srinagar, Feb 6: (UNI) A Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) commander was killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Wednesday afternoon, official sources said here this evening.
Meanwhile, mobile internet service has been suspended in Pulwama, where clashes have erupted.
They said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir launched a joint CASO in village Chakoora Litter in Pulwam this afternoon following a tip off about the presence of militants. However, security forces came under fire when they were moving towards a particular area in the village, he said adding troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter. A LeT commander Irfan Ahmad Sheikh, a local resident was killed. Irfan was active in the area for the past one year. The body and a weapon has been recovered, they added.
Additional security forces have been cordoned off and all exit point sealed to foil any attempt by militants to escape.
Official sources said security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in the nearby village to prevent any demonstration.
They said two to three militants are holed up in the area.
