Kargil shuts in support of demands
Kargil, Feb 8: (UNI) Life was on Friday crippled due to general strike in this border town of Ladakh region in the Jammu and Kashmir called by Anjuman Jamiyat Ullma Isna Ashriya Kargil Ladakh (AJUIAK) in support of their demands.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads. Work in government offices, courts and banks was disrupted due to strike.
AJUIAK demanding included opening of Kargil-Sakardu in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) road, closed since 197 due to partition, expansion of Kargil airport, Zojila tunnel to make Srinagar-Leh national highway all weather road. The road is closed since December last year and is likely to reopen in April.
Governor Satya Pal Malik has raised the issue of expansion of Kargil airport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his day-long visit to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
