One-way traffic to ply from Srinagar to Jammu on Kashmir highway

Srinagar, Feb 19: (UNI) Only one-way traffic will ply on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, while the historic Mughal and Srinagar-Leh roads remained closed owing to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions since December last year.

“Only one-way traffic is allowed on the Kashmir highway and today vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu,” a traffic police official told UNI, adding that no vehicle will be allowed from the opposite direction.
He said fresh traffic from Kashmir to the winter capital of the state was allowed on the highway on Tuesday after clearing all the Jammu-bound vehicles on Monday, despite snow and rain.
Meanwhile, after remaining closed for about a week till February 12, partial restoration of the only all weather highway has stabilised the supply of essential commodities to the valley.
However, traffic on the highway, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir, remained closed since December last year due to accumulation several feet of snow, which has now frozen due to sub-zero temperature. But, traffic from border town of Kargil to Leh was through. The highway is likely to reopen in March or April.
The Anantnag-Kishtwar and Shopian to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region roads also remained closed since December last year.
