Srinagar, Feb 23: (UNI) Senior Communist Party of India (M) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said the decision of the government to stop advertisements to two local newspapers was very unfortunate and it was the duty of the government to respect freedom of press.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon Mr Tarigami said stopping advertisements to Greater Kashmir and Kashmir Reader newspapers for unknown reasons is unfortunate and authorities should ensure that the media in one of the most sensitive states in the country is not strangulated.

The government has a duty to respect the freedom of the press, and the right of people to receive information. It cannot stop advertisements simply for being critical of the government. The Kashmir media is reporting the same morbidity as the overall situation afflicted economy represents, he said.

Mr Tarigami said a negative intervention in this situation is clearly aimed at slaying the institutions of media. Hitting the two institutions will impact the state and status of both the journalists and the journalism in Kashmir.
