Srinagar, Apr 5 (UNI) Two inmates were injured when security forces fired pellets to restore peace in the central jail, Srinagar, in the down town, where inmates were protesting against the shifting of some jailed persons to Jammu, official sources said.
However, officials said the situation is under control now.
The authorities suspended internet mobile service in Srinagar to prevent spread of rumours. Restrictions were also imposed in most parts of the down town and all gates of historic Jamia Masjid were closed as a precautionary measure on Friday.
Sources said the trouble started last night when some inmates raised slogans against the reports that some persons lodged in the jail would be shifted to outside the valley jails.
There are about 280 inmates, including separatists, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), Jamaitul Ahalhadees and stone pelters besides convicts in the jail in the down town city.
Raising slogans raising slogans clashed with the jail security personnel and also set on fire two barracks. There were loud explosion after LPG cyclinder in the kitchen also caught fire.
Clashes continued for most part of the night, they said adding however, security force and state police personnel did not enter the jail premises to avoid casualities.
However, this morning when there was fresh clashes, security forces and state police personnel entered the jail and resorted to lathicharge and also fired pellets in which two inmates were injured.
Residents near the jail told UNI over phone that there was fire in the jail after clashes.
”We heard loud explosions and firing from the jail,” they said, adding that later security forces and state police personnel were deployed in nearby areas to prevent any demonstration.
Sources said fire tenders were rushed from different parts of the city, including Fire and Emergency headquarters, Batamloo to control the leaping flames, which were visible from a distance in the jail.
