Family of Malik expresses concern over his ‘deteriorating health’, shopkeepers down shutters
Srinagar, Apr 20: (UNI) Claiming that the JKLF chief was shifted to a hospital in New Delhi in a serious condition, the family of Mohammad Yasin Malik on Saturday sought his immediate release.
As soon as the reports about ‘deteriorating health condition’ of Malik spread in the city, shopkeepers downed shutters and traffic went off the road in Maisuma and adjoining areas.
Meanwhile, expressing concern over Malik’s health, moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq said the JKLF chief’s safety and well being is the responsibility of the state under whose detention he is arrested and slapped with PSA.
“Malik’s lawyer told us that the JKLF chief has been shifted to a hospital. The authorities were forced to tell his lawyer that his (Yasin Malik’s) condition is very serious and he is on a hunger strike from past twelve days,” the JKLF chief’s sister told reporters during a press conference here on Saturday.
She said that Malik has been on a hunger strike against his ‘illegal detention in Tihar Jail’.
Instantaneous shutdown was observed in Maisuma, stronghold of JKLF, and adjoining areas after the news spread. Shops and business establishments were closed and traffic went off the roads in the area, where security forces have been deployed in strength to maintain law and order.
The JKLF spokesman said that Malik is in a serious condition in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi. “Malik’s counsel was scheduled to meet him today as per Delhi court orders. However, he was informed by NIA officials that the proposed meeting has been cancelled,” he said.
Later, he said the lawyer came to know that Malik was admitted to the hospital.
“Deeply disturbed by the sudden news about Yasin Malik being seriously ill &shifted to hospital in New Delhi. As no one is allowed to meet him details are not yet known. His safety & well being is the responsibility of the state under whose detention he is arrested &slapped with PSA,” Mirwaiz wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
