Srinagar, May 14: Police on Tuesday seized government rice for public distribution from a vehicle in civil lines area of the summer capital, a police spokesman said this afternoon.
He said a police party led by Station House Officer (SHO) of police station Maisuma intercepted a three wheeler near Maisuma on the bank of river Jehlum. During the search of the vehicle 15 quintals of rice which was for public distribution was seized.
He said rice was later to be repackaged into the bags of popular brands and sold them in the market.
Spokesman said the driver Sami Ullah Tharno and shopkeeper Mudasir Ahmad Rah were arrested and vehicle seized.
He said a case has been registered and further investigation taken up.
