Srinagar, Jun 14: Moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) and other media associations on Friday paid tribute to senior journalist and founder of Rising Kashmir on his first death anniversary.
Mr Bukhari and his two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) were shot dead on this day last year by unidentified gunmen outside Rising Kashmir’s office in Press Enclave in the heart of summer capital, Srinagar.
“Remembering dear Shujaat Bukhari on his first death anniversary, a courageous man an influential journalist, an exceptional human being and above all a well wisher of his people. What beautiful souls we lost to this conflict! May Allah grant him highest standards in Jannah, Ameen!,” Mirwaiz wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
An official spokesperson of KEG said that the Guild paid rich tributes to Mr Bukhari on his first death anniversary. “KEG members remembered the contributions of Mr Bukhari that he made to the institution of media in Kashmir,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kashmir Video Journalists Association (KVJA) also paid tribute to Mr Bukhari at a meeting held here on Friday.
The state police on June 28, 2018 addressed a press conference, asserting that the murder was planned in Pakistan and executed by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). “Sajjad Gul of Srinagar — allegedly hiding in Pakistan — Azad Ahmad Malik, Muzaffar Ahmad, both reportedly from south Kashmir, and Naveed Jatt, a Pakistani militant, were responsible for the killing of Mr Bukhari,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, S P Pani told reporters during the press conference.
Jatt, who had escaped from SMHS hospital earlier in 2018, was later killed in a gunfight in November last year.
