Srinagar, Jul 18: A soldier was killed when a falling tree hit him near the Line of Control (LoC) near the frontier district of Kupwara, a defence ministry spokesman said.
He said Lt Gen KJS Dhillon, GOC Chinar Corps and all ranks paid homage to slain soldier on Thursday.
He said Naik Ramandeep Singh, leading a patrol party near LoC in Kupwara, was critically wounded when he was hit by a falling tree. Naik Singh was immediately rushed to hospital where he succumbed.
Lt Gen Dhillon and all ranks paid homage to the slain soldier on behalf of a proud nation, he said adding in a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also paid their last respects to the slain.
Naik Singh was 35 years old and had joined the Army in 2002. He belonged to Village Tibba of Dhuri Tehsil in Sangrur District of Punjab and is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.
Spokesman said his mortal remains were flown for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours.
