Trump’s disclosure marks a huge policy shift of India on Kashmir issue: Mehbooba

Srinagar, Jul 23: Reacting to the US President statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said despite India refuting idea of third party mediation on J&K, the disclosure made by Donald Trump marks a huge policy shift.
Ms Mehbooba, who is the president of People Democratic Party (PDP), said even though US doesn’t hold a great record in resolving protracted conflicts. “I hope both countries seize this opportunity to forge peace through dialogue,” she said.
“Despite GOI refuting idea of third party mediation on J&K, the disclosure made by Trump marks a huge policy shift. Even though USA doesn’t hold a great record in resolving protracted conflicts, hope both countries seize this opportunity to forge peace through dialogue,” Ms Mehbooba wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
After a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Mr Trump on Monday said that Prime Minister Modi, during the G20 summit in Osaka sought his help in resolving the Kashmir issue.
However, in Parliament, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday asserted that no request to mediate on Kashmir issued was made by Mr Modi to the US President. Though, the opposition political parties have asked PM Modi to clear the air on the issue.
