As the debate on the declining of moral values in youngsters continues no one seems in agreement that the Educational institutions and homes have an important role in shaping the personality of the children based on the values in their lives.
Today a typical student in Kashmir is much more open-minded than those of previous generations as he is well versed with the happenings around him on all fronts may be social, economic, political or religious. Side by side the younger generations, as they step into teenage-hood undergo tremendous changes in physical appearance, psychological makeup and cognitive response. It is with all these developments within and without he has to grow as a conscious citizen of tomorrow with all approved morals of the social set up he belongs.
When most people talk about a school curriculum, they think of math, science, social studies, arts, economics, computers, language courses and so on; seldom have they talked about the moral education as a part of such curriculum. The neglect of moral education in schools is basically depriving the students of their basic right of well grooming and the society later on is getting half baked products who with the passage of time becomes parasites for the entire system .Such half baked products may enjoy subsequently some prestigious position in any field yet they cannot deliver as an honest, upright and dedicated soul instead such persons ( shall) run the system according to their whims and fantasies.
If a person has never learned moral values how we are expecting justice from him. On the other hand he shall be running the affairs either at home or office as per the Dictate of ‘might is right’ with the tools of EVIL at his command? .To secure future we shall have to inculcate in children the approved morals of the society taking help from all the available tools of teaching methodology including latest technological inputs .The Environment we live in plays an important role in the upbringing of a child. So the children who are brought up in isolation of values for their own specific reasons may not groom in to a responsible and conscious citizen of future..
For a society like ours in Kashmir, we have a different set of values than our counterparts living in other parts of country however the basics shall remain the same.
Our elders have taught us that the mother is the first teacher in that situation naturally the home becomes our first school. But, unfortunately at present, due to the complexity of modern times home is gradually losing its importance and grip. The busy schedule of working parents often result in kids being glued to television or computer games. Parents can mould their young ones into socially responsible citizens by paying attention to their needs, and providing them openings to act, react and experience. In words and deeds parents play a vital role in helping their children to be morally good and acceptable.
Knowledge sharing in an educational institution should not be the only goal of teaching learning process but it should be overall development of our children so that they are able to rein the affairs of society in any field of activity. Every day students are exposed to violence, dishonesty, and all other manipulation of the evil and get influenced by them as such learning must teach them to guard against each of them while operating on ground to face the real world. How many times students are caught cheating in the exams, about bullying in school and fights between gangs. If moral values were taught in schools we would have fewer of these counterproductive problems.
Unfortunately, many of the role models of young people are setting bad examples. These bad examples range from sexual promiscuity, degrading of women, advocacy of violence and propagation of dishonest methods to succeed by adopting all means of short cuts and dishonest tactics. We need to check the growing tendencies of cheating habits among our children. Better counseling in many ways on the subject can pave way for the younger generation to achieve the desired results rather than refraining them from doing an act harshly. We should let our younger generation live a simple life and follow designed patterns of advice based on morals step by step to counter the bad influences prevalent in our society. We can start it from our homes when even kids haven’t stepped out from the boundary walls of their respective homes. Teach them how to give unconditional love and kindness to the people who deserve it; teach them how to become generous and competent professional at the same time..
