Srinagar, Sep 18 : The electrical employees union on Tuesday staged a demonstration here in this capital city against the state government’s move to ‘privatize’ distribution of electricity in the state.
Reports reaching news gathering agency Global News Service said that dozens of PDD employees led by Abdul Salam Rajpuri, state president J&K electrical employees union today held a protest at Pratap Park here against the government’s decision to ‘privatize’ distribution of electricity in the state. The protesters said that the union was not taken into confidence before taking the decision on privatization.
“Every corporation be it J&K cements, J&K minerals have failed in Kashmir. Some officers are misleading the government as well as the people over privatize distribution of electricity in the state,” Rajpuri said.
Rajpuri cautioned that if the corporation is created, the consumers paying Rs 2 per unit will have to pay Rs 10 for the same. He said the government decision will burden the people, who are already facing brunt on the economic losses.
“We will intensify our agitation if the government goes ahead with its decision on privatization of electricity. In the name of unbundling, a corporation is being created by the government. This is purely an anti-people move,” he said.
He said that the funds meant for up gradation of electricity scenario have not been used by the PDD department due to the reasons are best known to them.
“And the unutilized funds are responsible for the messy state of affairs in the power department,” he added.
Pertinently, last month the then Governor NN Vohra gave a nod to privatization of state’s power in a SAC meet. A New Delhi-based firm was given approval for installing and maintaining meters, generating bills and procuring infrastructure. (GNS)
