Soldier, Naved Jatt’s aide among 2 LeT militants killed in Kulgam

Srinagar, Nov 27 : Two militants, one of them a close aide of Lashker-e-Toiba commander Naved Jatt, and a soldier were killed while paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were wounded in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday.

“Based on a credible input about the presence of (militants) in Redwani area of District Kulgam, a cordon and search operation was launched in the midnight jointly by Police and (government forces) in the area, a police spokesperson said.

As the searches were going on, he said, the search party was fired upon by the militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight, he said.

“In the initial exchange of fire, one soldier (Prakash Yadav ) of 01 RR sustained injuries. He was evacuated to the hospital where he succumbed. Besides, two personnel of 163 Bn CRPF sustained minor injuries in the encounter,” he said.

In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.

The police identified them slain as Ajaz Ahmad Makroo son of Late Ghulam Rasool Makroo of Qaimoh and Waris Ahmad Malik son of Bashir Ahmad of Arwani.

Both the killed militants were affiliated with LeT and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of attack on security establishments, the spokesperson said.

Ajaz Makroo as per police records had a long history of terror crime records since 2017. He was a close associate Naveed Jat and Azad Dada. “Several cases were registered against him and the prominent among them include FIR No. 60/2016, FIR No. 45/2017, FIR No. 100/2017, FIR No. 10/2018, FIR No. 13/2018 registered at Police Station Kulgam. Similarly, Waris was also figured in several.”

While searches were going on in the area, reports reaching GNS said hundreds of people, mainly youth took to streets and clashed with the forces. Several youths were injured as government forces responded with teargas smoke canisters and pellets.

Also, thousands of people participated in the last rites of the slain militants in their respective native villages.

Meanwhile, mobile internet services were suspended throughout south Kashmir in wake of the killing of militants.(GNS)
