One-way traffic continues on Kashmir highway; Leh NH, Mughal road remain closed

Srinagar, Jan 16: (UNI) Despite bad weather conditions, one-way traffic continued on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, on Wednesday.
However, Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, and historic 86-km-long Mughal road, remained closed for the past about two months due to accumulation of several feet of snow.
“The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for one-way traffic despite bad weather conditions,” a traffic police official said.
He said the weather was cloudy though it didn’t snow at any place along the highway in Kashmir, which received fresh moderate to heavy snowfall at most places since this morning.
“Traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu,” he said, adding no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction.
However, he said, restriction on the movement of Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) and Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) have been imposed to avoid any traffic jams on the highway, where road widening was under progress at several places besides frequent landslides and shooting stones which are being cleared immediately.
Hundreds of LMVs, mostly carrying passengers, left different parts of Srinagar this morning at 0600 hrs for Jammu, he said, adding that these vehicles have to cross Pantha Chowk till 1130 hrs. “They have to cross Levdora between 0700 hrs to 1300 hrs,” he said.
He said HMVs have to cross Levdora between 1330 hrs and 1900 hrs. “No vehicle will be allowed to pass these areas after cut off timings,” he added.
Meanwhile, traffic on national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir, remained suspended for the past about two months due to accumulation of several feet of snow, particularly at Zojila pass. However, traffic from border town of Kargil to Leh on the highway was plying, he said.
Similarly, 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed.
