All arrangements in place for Modi’s Srinagar visit on Feb 3, security beefed up
Srinagar, Jan 31: (UNI) All arrangements have been made while security has been beefed up in the summer capital, Srinagar, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on Sunday.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit all the three regions of the state — Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh — to lay foundation stones and inaugurate various developmental projects on Sunday.
Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan said all arrangements including, security, electricity, transport, medical facility, drinking water, parking, security passes and other requirements have been put in place.
Despite snow and rain, checkpoints have been set up at various places in the city, where security forces are randomly checking vehicles, frisking passengers and checking their identity cards before allowing them to move ahead.
“A high alert has also been issued in Kashmir valley, including Srinagar city, following inputs about the militant plan to carry out attack on security and other important installation on or before PM’s visit to the state,” a security official told UNI.
He said field commanders have been directed to remain extra vigilant in Kashmir, particularly in the summer capital, Srinagar. “Checkpoints have also been established on the roads connecting different districts to Srinagar. The vehicles coming in the city are properly searched and identity cards of passengers are checked before allowing them into Srinagar,” he added.
Official sources said that several youths, mostly stone pelters, were arrested by security forces and placed in preventive custody in several local police stations and central jail, Srinagar, ahead of PM Modi’s visit.
General Officer Commander-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command of the Indian Lt General Ranbir Singh on Wednesday visited Kashmir and reviewed the security situation in the valley. The visit of Lt Gen Singh holds significance as it comes just days before the PM’s visit and at a time when militant activities have increased several folds.
Ten people including, two CRPF jawans, were injured in two separate grenade attacks during the last 24 hours in south Kashmir while about a dozen such attacks have been carried out by militants in the valley, particularly in the summer capital, Srinagar, this month.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary, BVR Subrahmanyam, who reviewed arrangements ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Kashmir valley at a meeting held here at S K International Conference Centre (SKICC) on Wednesday, directed to put in place all arrangements regarding official line up, reception line up and fool proof security.
He also impressed upon the Traffic department to make proper arrangement for the parking of vehicles. He was informed that the arrangement for parking of vehicles has been made near Botanical Garden and at the Golf course.
During his visit to Kashmir, the Prime Minister will lay foundation stone of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Transit Accommodation for Migrant families and will also launch SAUBHAGYA Scheme.
