Srinagar receive snow-rain resulting in chill, disrupting normal life
Srinagar, Jan 31: (UNI) Even though the 40-day-long Chilai Kalan, harshest period of winter ended yesterday, there was no respite from the chilly conditions as summer capital, Srinagar, received fresh snowfall and rain since early Thursday morning, disrupting normal life.
The chailai kalan which started from December 21st last year witnessed six snowfall, breaking over a decade long record, followed by 20-day-long Chilai Khurd and 10 day Chilai Bacha.
Roof and tree tops besides open fields had turned white when people woke up this morning in Srinagar. However, snow melted after rain followed this morning. It was snowing mixed with rain at the time of filing this report, disrupted normal life.
People prefer to remain in their homes because of chilly conditions outside. The experts, particularly, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) president Dr Nissarul Hassan, have directed people suffering from heart ailment and elderly persons and children not to venture out in the morning and evening when the temperature goes down.
Due to chill the normal activities resumes only after 0930 hrs in the city. Shopkeepers in majority business hubs are opening their shops and business establishments only after 1000 hrs. Very less number of vehicles, particularly public transport, could be seen plying on the roads in the morning and evening. Though educational institutions remained closed in view of winter vacation, students, including girls, could be seen attending coaching and tuition centres in the city, particularly in the uptown, where over a dozen such centres are located.
A Met department spokesman said that there could be light to moderate rain and snow in Srinagar today, when the mercury during the day will remain below normal though the minimum temperature was minus 0.3 degree, 0.7 degree above normal.
People alleged that due to frequent closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the prices of essentials, particularly vegetables, has witnessed increase. The prices of local vegetables has also been increased by the traders.
