Snow continues in upper reaches in Kashmir, sunshine greets people in Srinagar
Srinagar, Feb 22: (UNI) Intermittent snowfall continued for the third successive day in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other upper reaches in Kashmir valley though bright sunshine greeted people in the summer capital, Srinagar, brining much need relief from chilly weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the night temperature dipped though remained above normal at majority of the places in Kashmir valley, where weather will remain dry on Saturday.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Sunday. “The WD will result in more snow and rain from Sunday onwards,” he added.
After received intermittent rain during the last two days, people woke up to a sunny Friday morning in Srinagar, resulting in major improvement in the maximum temperature, which settled over 2 degree above normal. As the day progressed, light rain lashed the city in the evening though weather again turned pleasant as sun came out from behind the clouds. The night temperature in Srinagar also improved and settled at 1 degree, against 0.6 degree.
He said skies will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 6 degree and minus 8 degree, respectively.
After witnessing a dip of about 3 degree in the night temperature from Thursday, bright sunshine greeted tourists at Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow. But, the ski resort again received fresh snowfall in the evening, against resulting in dip in the day temperature. Against minus 3.2 degree recorded on Thursday, the night temperature in Gulmarg was minus 6.4 degree, which is still above normal.
The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped a degree from Thursday and settled at minus 1.1 degree, which is 3 degree above normal. The weather was pleasant till afternoon at Pahalagm, but it started to rain in the evening, again resulting in dip in the day temperature.
Fresh snowfall was also witnessed at various places, including Qazigund and Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, was again closed due to landslides and shooting stones.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, settled at 0.6 degree and 0.3 degree, respectively.
