Gulmarg, Pahalgam receive fresh snow, rain lashes plains in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 2: (UNI) The other upper reaches, including world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and tourist resort of Pahalgam, received fresh snowfall on Saturday, while rain lashed plains in Kashmir valley, resulting in dip in the day temperature, which settled several degrees below normal.
However, the night temperature improved and also settled above normal across Kashmir valley, where more snow and rain is predicted during the next 72 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
Meanwhile, a High Danger Avalanche warning has been issued for the higher reaches of Ramban on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, Anantnag and Kulgam in south Kashmir, Kupwara and Bandipora in north and Ganderbal in central valley for next 24 hours.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that very light rain and snow would occur at fairly widespread to widespread places in Kashmir valley during the next 48 hours. “Rain and snow would occur at scatter places on Monday in the valley,” he said, adding the weather will remain dry on Tuesday and Wednesday.
But, he said a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea, and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan will hit the region on March 7. “This WD will lead to rain and snow at isolated places in Kashmir valley,” he added.
Gulmarg, where ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow, received fresh snowfall since Saturday morning. ”Gulmarg received fresh several inches of snow since this morning. Tourists are enjoying snowfall and other snow related activities, including skiing,” a hotelier told UNI over the phone.
He said Kongdori and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, also received light to moderate snowfall. Despite an improvement of 3 degree from Friday, the ski resort was the coldest place in the valley at minus 5 degree, which is slightly above normal. But, the maximum temperature in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, dipped and settled about a degree below normal.
After witnessing a slight improvement in the night temperature, people woke up to a snowy Saturday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. As the day progressed, intermittent rain lashed Srinagar, disrupting normal life. The summer capital was the only place in the valley, where the night temperature remained below normal. Against 0.2 degree, recorded on Friday, the night temperature in Srinagar was 0.6 degree, which is still about a degree below normal.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, received light snow since Saturday afternoon, resulting in dip in the day temperature, which settled about 5 degree below normal. Against minus 4.1 degrees recorded on Friday, the night temperature at Pahalgam was minus 0.2 degrees, which is about 3 degree above normal.
The upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, also received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received moderate to heavy snowfall.
Fresh snowfall was also witnessed at various places, including Qazigund and Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, improved and settled at 0.8 degree in both the places, respectively.
