Only one-way traffic to ply from Srinagar to Jammu for 2nd day

Srinagar, Mar 8: (UNI) Only one-way traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu for the second day on Friday on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country while 86-km-long historic Mughal and Anantnag-Kishtwar remained shut since December last year.
Meanwhile, snow clearance operation on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which remained closed since December last year, has been started from both sides of the Zojila pass.
Traffic will continue to ply from Srinagar to Jammu for the second day on Friday also, a traffic police official told UNI.
However, he said no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction to avoid traffic jam and accidents.
There were large number of trucks, carrying fruit stranded on this side of the Jawahar tunnel for the past several days.
Former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah alleged that not allowing 800 Apple laden trucks to reach other parts of the country is another step aimed at crushing the economy of Kashmir.
He said after essential services, it is the prime duty of the government to help in the safe transit of the fruit laden trucks to reach their destinations. Being a perishable item, they should have ensured speedy transit of fruit trucks, he demanded.
However, he said the move is yet another glaring example of the imprudent policy to crush the very economy of Kashmir,” adding, “The orchardists keep their eye on the annual produce to pay for their debts due to banks and take care of their other household chores. This move will inadvertently affect the backbone of our fragile economy.”
Meanwhile, frequent landslides and shooting stones has become a routine on the highway forcing authorities to suspend traffic. However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, are working round the clock to clear the landslides and shooting stones on the highway and put through again traffic.
