Srinagar, May 10: (UNI) Traffic will continue to ply from Jammu to Srinagar for the second consecutive day on Sunday on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with rest of the country.
No vehicle, including security force convoy would be allowed from opposite direction today, a traffic police official told UNI.
Meanwhile, massive snow clearance operation has been launched from both sides of the Zojila pass on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir, which is closed since December last year.
The historic 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region and Anantnag-Kishtwar also remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow.
Official said traffic will continue to ply from Jammu to Srinagar for the second day today, when hundreds of trucks, carrying essentials and oil and LPG tankers besides passenger vehicles left different parts of the Jammu region for Kashmir.
However, the Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will have to cross Nagrota between 0500 hrs to 1000 hrs and Jakhen Udhampur 0600 hrs to 1100 hrs. Later Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed after 1100 hrs, he said adding no vehicle will be allowed after the deadline.
Frequent landslides and shooting stones has become a routine on the highway, forcing authorities to suspend traffic. However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, are working round-the-clock to clear the landslides and shooting stones on the highway and put through again traffic.
Meanwhile, Kashmir valley is still facing acute shortage of essentials, including fresh vegetables, meat, chicken and eggs besides LPG cylinders. The prices essentials, including local vegetables had witnessed sharp increase. Majority meat shops are closed while prices of chicken and eggs has increased.
The Hindustan Petroleum (HP) has yet to resume home delivery service in majority areas in summer capital, Srinagar. People of uptown, including Budshah Nagar, Azad Basti and Iram lane alleged that despite booking their refill three weeks ago are yet to get the refilled cylinder from Srinagar Gas Service, Ram Bagh.
Meanwhile, long queues could be seen outside temporary sale centres in Srinagar, where people are waiting for hours to get a cylinder.
