Sun greets people in Kashmir, night temp dips

Srinagar, Mar 12: (UNI) After witnessing rain and snow on Monday, there was some respite from chilly weather conditions as bright sunshine greeted people on Tuesday, though ice cold winds continued in Kashmir valley, where another spell of wet weather is predicted from Wednesday onwards.

However, the night temperature dipped and settled below normal across Kashmir valley due to clear skies.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that weather would remain dry during the next 24 hours, which could result in further dip in the night temperature.

However, he said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Wednesday. “Under the influence of the WD, rain and snow would occur at scattered places on Wednesday and fairly widespread on Thursday in Kashmir,” he added.

The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 11.8 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 5.9 degree, respectively.

He said skies will be mainly clear to generally cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 6 degree and minus 8 degree, respectively.

People woke up to a chilly Tuesday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. However, as the day progressed sun came out, brining much needed relief from the chilly weather conditions though the maximum temperature still remained about a degree below normal.

Meanwhile, some roads in the city, particularly uptown, remained waterlogged due to incessant rain on Monday. The night temperature in Srinagar dipped about 2 degree from Monday and settled at 2.4 degree, which is about a degree below normal.

The spokesperson told UNI that skies will be generally cloudy to light rain and snow during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 14 degree and 2 degree, respectively.

The skies remained cloudy in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is about 55 km from here in north Kashmir. The maximum temperature in Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are under several feet of snow, dipped and settled about 3 degree below normal. The ski resort was the only place in the valley where the night temperature improved marginally. Against minus 3.4 degree, recorded on Monday, the night temperature in Gulmarg was minus 3.2 degree.

The night temperature at world famous tourist resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped about 3 degree from Monday and settled at minus 4 degree, which is 2 degree below normal.

The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag dipped and settled at 1 degree, minus 0.2 degree and minus 2.9 degree, respectively.
