Restriction on civilian traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla highway lifted, continues on Kashmir NH

Srinagar, May 1: Restriction imposed on the movement of civilian traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla national highway has been completely lifted after it was limited from two days a week to only Sundays last month, an official spokesperson said on Wednesday.
However, the two-day restriction in week on civilian movement will continue on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
He said the restriction on civilian movement on the national highway between Srinagar and Baramulla in north Kashmir will be completely lifted with effect from Thursday. “There would be no prohibition on civilian traffic in this stretch on Sunday or Wednesday,” he said.
But, he said the restrictions would continue between Srinagar and Udhampur on the highway as earlier.
Though, he said these would be reviewed periodically and relaxation would be made as the need for restriction reduces.
Earlier last month, the restriction on civilian movement on the highway between Srinagar and Baramulla was reduced only to Sunday from April 22.
“The local administration would continue to facilitate movement of civilian traffic as has been happening so far, including by allowing public transport of JKSRTC to move during the period of restriction on the NH,” he said.
He said a complete review of restrictions on the Highway would be done subsequently.
In order to facilitate unhindered and secure movement of Security Forces’ Convoys, he said the government had imposed a prohibition on civilian traffic on the highway from Baramulla to Udhampur twice a week-Sunday and Wednesday, from 0400 hrs to 1700 hrs.
He said these restrictions became necessary following the large movement of security forces on an unprecedented scale after the Pulwama terror attack. “These forces were required both for anti-militancy operations and for conducting general elections peacefully,” he added.
He said the Government is monitoring the convoy needs of security forces on a real time basis and making all attempts to minimize public inconvenience.
