Gulmarg heights receive fresh snowfall; light rain lashes plains in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 10: The upper reaches in world famous ski rest of Gulmarg, including Apharwat mountain, received fresh snowfall, while light rain lashed Srinagar and other plains in Kashmir valley, resulting in a dip in the day temperature.
However, the night temperature improved and settled above normal across Kashmir valley, where wet weather is predicted for the next six days.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that fairly widespread light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 48 hours in the valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region. “Light rain would occur at isolated places on Sunday,” he said, adding a fresh WD which hit the region on Sunday evening which would against result in more rain and thundershowers.

He said a weather warning has been issued for Friday and Saturday, when thundershowers and lightening with gusty winds of 40 to 50 km/hr speed would occur at isolated places in the valley.

He said a similar weather warning has been issued for Monday and Tuesday.

The upper reaches of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh light snowfall on Friday, much to the delight of skiers and tourists, who were seen waiting in long queues to get their turn to ride Gandola cable car, despite rain in the main ski resort area.
“Khilanmarg and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, received fresh light snowfall in the afternoon while main Gulmarg received rain. But the dip in the day temperature, didn’t deter the tourists who were enjoying themselves,” a hotelier told UNI over the phone.

The wet weather resulted in dip in the maximum temperature in Gulmarg, which was the only place in the valley were the night temperature dipped and settled below normal. Against 7 degree recorded on Thursday, the night temperature in Gulmarg was 3 degree, which is over 2 degree below normal.

After witnessing above normal maximum temperature from last couple of days, chill revisited the summer capital, Srinagar due to overcast conditions followed by rain. However, as the day progressed, the skies cleared and bright sunshine people in the city, resulting in improvement in the maximum temperature.

He said very light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 23 degree and 12 degree, respectively.
Rain lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 from here in south Kashmir, since early this morning, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature though the mercury during the night improved due to cloudy skies.
Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and another tourist resort Kukernag also received rain since early this morning.
