Srinagar, May 14: Security forces on Tuesday burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse students who were protesting against the rape of a 3-year-old old girl in Sumbal in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.
Students of Amar Singh College boycotted their classes and staged massive protests inside the campus and tried to move outside. However, the security forces and police personnel deployed in the area prevented them from coming out the campus, triggering clashes.
Students raising slogans, demanding death penalty to accused, clashed with the security forces after they were not allowed to move the main road. Students pelted stones and security forces responded by burst teargas shells. Later, clashes spread to nearby areas badly affecting traffic on otherwise busy route to uptown. Traffic to uptown was later diverted through Zero bridge resulting in massive traffic jam at several places.
Protesting students also clashed with security forces at several other places.
Similar clashes were also reported at Bemina, where students of Bemina college hit the streets against the rape incident.
Students of different places also protested against the incident demanding stern action against the accused.
Authorities in many districts have ordered suspension of class work in colleges and Higher Secondary Schools (HSSs) in the valley as a precautionary measure.
