Srinagar, May 20: Class work resumed on Monday in all educational institutes, including Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), in Kashmir valley after remaining suspended during the last five days.
“All educational institutes, including schools, colleges and universities, have reopened across Kashmir valley on Monday,” official sources told UNI.
The educational institutes, particularly Colleges, IUST, and some Higher Secondary Schools (HSSs), were closed by authorities since Wednesday as a precautionary measure in view of widespread protests and clashes against the rape of a 3-year-old girl in Bandipora followed by death of a protestor on Thursday.
They said normal class work has resumed on Monday in all educational institutes, including Colleges in Budgam, Ganderbal in central; Baramulla, Sopore, Bandipora, Kupwara. “Good student attendance was recorded in these colleges,” they said.
They said all colleges and HSSs, which were closed on Thursday by authorities on Thursday, reopened on Monday in the summer capital, Srinagar.
Similarly, HSSs, which remained closed since Wednesday in other parts of the valley, have also resumed normal classes.
Most educational institutes were closed on Wednesday in the valley in view of protests against the rape of a three-year-old girl in Sumbal area of Bandipora. The suspension of classes continued on Thursday in the backdrop of death of the death of a youth, injured during clashes at Pattan in Baramulla. Arshad Ahmad Dar was critically injured on Monday during clashes which broke out against the rape of the minor. However, the class work could not resume on Friday for security reasons following strike called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against civilian and militant killings during the Holy month of Ramazan.
On Saturday, the educational institutes remained closed following a gazetted holiday in view of Budh Purnima.
The Kashmir University, Central University Kashmir (CUK) and IUST also suspended examinations scheduled to be held on Friday in view of the strike called by separatists.
Students of Amar Singh College on Tuesday clashed with security forces, demanding capital punishment for the rape accused. Similar protests and clashes were reported from some other HSSs and colleges in the valley during the last couple of days.
Over a dozen people, including Dar, were injured during clashes and protests which erupted on Monday across the valley against the rape.
Governor Satya Pal Malik and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan later on Monday appealed people to maintain peace, brotherhood and law & order, assuring that the inquiry of Sumbal rape incident is being conducted on fast track basis.
