Srinagar, Aug 1: Life was on Thursday disrupted as all major roads, including historic Lal Chowk had turned into stream after heavy rain this morning.
However, situation improved after de-watering pumps were pressed into service by the authorities.
A Met department spokesman said today that Fairly Widespread (FWS) rain will continue today and tomorrow in the Kashmir valley which will be followed by scattered and isolated rain till August 7.
He said summer capital, Srinagar recorded 26.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Traffic movement came to halt and pedestrians had to took shelter under Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh fly over and other safe areas following heavy rain this morning in Srinagar.
School children, carrying school bags and water bottles, were the worst hit as majority roads were under rain water.
Roads around the Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, was under about two feet of water, presenting a look of a stream. Similarly, Residency road, including Regal Chowk, was under several feet of water, disrupting vehicular and pedestrian movement.
However, the authorities had put up a heavy duty de-watering pump at Lal Chowk which was later pressed into service to restore the main road.
Rain water had also entered a number of building at Exchange road, including the UNI and Red Cross office compound, forcing employees to remove their shoes before entering their offices through water.
Similar situation was witnessed in other low-lying areas in the city.
